PETA Will Hand Out 200 Vegan Dogs in Nod to Town’s Quiet Fireworks Show

On Wednesday, PETA will be on the scene at the Independence Day Community Celebration—which will feature an animal-friendly quiet pyrotechnic show in lieu of a traditional loud fireworks display—to pass out grilled vegan Tofurky Jumbo Hot Dogs for attendees to enjoy.

“These delicious animal-free wieners will hopefully inspire revelers to declare their independence from revolting meaty dogs and go vegan,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s tasty treats will add even more animal-friendly flavor to an already compassionate Fourth of July celebration.”

Pigs are intelligent, sensitive animals who feel pain and fear, have unique personalities, and form strong bonds with one another. PETA encourages people to keep pigs and all other animals off their plates and to opt for healthy and humane veggie dogs, such as Tofurky Jumbo Hot Dogs, Field Roast Frankfurters, and Beyond Meat Brat Original Beyond Sausages, which are widely available in grocery stores across the country and contain none of the cholesterol or cancer-causing agents found in their meat-based counterparts. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year.

The deafening booms of conventional fireworks can terrify companion animals, wildlife, and humans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Animal shelters typically see an increase in the number of lost dogs following these displays, many of whom panic and break loose from leashes or jump over fences or even through glass windows in an attempt to get away from the terrifying sounds. Loud displays can also cause deer and other wild animals to flee onto roads, where they’re at risk of being injured or killed by vehicles.

As part of its comprehensive campaign to end all loud fireworks displays, PETA offered Costa Mesa $5000 toward its first community fireworks show in 2017—if organizers agreed to use quiet fireworks, which they did. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview.
