Push for Vegan Creamer Heads to Delta Meeting
PETA Will Call On Company to Add Dairy-Free Option to Its Coffee Services

As Delta shareholders gather for the company’s annual meeting on Thursday, PETA—which owns stock in the company in order to push it to adopt animal-friendly policies—will ask the airline to meet the booming demand for dairy-free products by adding vegan creamers to its flights.

“When research shows that over two-thirds of people use vegan creamers in their coffee, adding dairy-free options to in-flight beverage services is just good business,” says PETA Senior Director of Corporate Affairs Anne Brainard. “PETA is calling on Delta to make the skies a friendlier place for its passengers, the Earth, and animals by adding vegan creamers to all its flights.”
Nondairy milk sales in the U.S. have grown by 61% over the last five years, while dairy milk sales have fallen by 15%. Cow’s milk is the number one food allergen among infants and children, and an estimated 90% of Asian Americans and 75% of Native and African Americans are lactose intolerant.
In addition, a lead researcher from the University of Oxford noted that, in terms of reducing one’s environmental impact on the planet, going vegan “is far bigger than cutting down on your flights.” And of course, dairy-free beverages spare cows suffering in the dairy industry, which separates calves from their mothers (often within hours of birth) so that humans can consume the cows’ milk instead. Male calves are typically shipped off to be slaughtered for the veal industry, while females eventually endure the same fate as their mothers: repeated forced insemination until their milk production wanes, at which point they’re sent to the slaughterhouse.
