PETA has selected the 2019 winners of the Top 10 Golden Burger Awards from restaurants across the country—and Oregon-based, all-vegan Next Level Burger has nabbed a spot on the list for its Signature burger.
The award-winning burger is made from whole foods, including mushrooms and quinoa. It’s topped with avocado, vegan cheddar- or Swiss-style cheese, and vegan roasted garlic-thyme mayo plus all the trimmings and served on an organic wheat bun.
“From its handmade mushroom patty to its creamy garlic mayo, this tasty vegan burger takes the cheeseburger to the next level,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “All the satisfying burgers on PETA’s national Top 10 list are proving that compassion can be a delicious business.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is the human-supremacist view that other species are nothing more than commodities. The group notes that sensitive, gentle cows destined to become hamburger patties are transported to slaughterhouses in all weather extremes. Then, they’re strung up by one leg and their throat is slit, sometimes while they’re still conscious. Eating meat and other animal-derived foods has been conclusively linked to a higher risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.
Next Level Burger will receive a framed certificate. Other winners include the Bac’n Cheezeburger at Arlo’s Curbside Kitchen in Austin, Texas; the Black Bean Burger from Sunspot in Knoxville, Tennessee; the Whiskey BBQ Mushroom Burger at Kahiau’s Bakery & Cafe in Virginia Beach, Virginia; and the Big WAC at Green New American Vegetarian in Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona.
