In honor of World Week for Animals in Laboratories, a giant costumed “dog” will lead PETA supporters in a lively protest on Tuesday against the University of Pennsylvania, which helps to fund muscular dystrophy experiments on dogs at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Video footage from TAMU’s laboratory shows dogs who were deliberately bred to develop a crippling and painful form of muscular dystrophy struggling to walk, swallow, and even breathe.
When: Tuesday, April 23, 12 noon
Where: At the southwest corner of S. 34th and Walnut streets, Philadelphia
“Money from federal grants to University of Pennsylvania experimenters has been funneled to Texas A&M, where dogs are bred to suffer from canine muscular dystrophy—a practice that has continued for almost four decades, with no cure or successful treatment for human patients in sight,” says PETA Research Associate Dr. Emily Trunnell. “PETA is calling on Penn to pull its funding from these indefensible experiments immediately.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
