Bill Maher’s New Rule: Don’t Be a Douche—Ditch Canada Goose

Coyotes are clever, protective animals, and geese partner for life. Yet Canada Goose insists on killing them to make overpriced jackets. Television host and comedian Bill Maher has had enough, and he’s calling out the “douches” wearing these cruel coats.

In a “New Rules” segment, Maher calls out the “hipster douches” and “hipsterazzis” who insist on sporting jackets made by torturing and killing coyotes for their fur and geese for their feathers. “Geese are gentle and loyal and partner for life, but there’s no ‘happily ever after’ at the slaughterhouse,” Maher says. “Instead, they’re alive and filled with terror when they’re stunned and shackled and their throats are slit.”

To make the fur-lined hoods, trappers supplying Canada Goose capture coyotes in painful and indiscriminate steel traps and then shoot, strangle, stomp on, or bludgeon them to death. Some coyotes—especially mothers desperate to get back to their pups—even try to chew off their own legs to escape.

This is far from the first time that the host of Real Time With Bill Maher has spoken out for animals. From the golden retrievers being bred to develop muscular dystrophy at Texas A&M University to the deer being hunted at his alma mater, Cornell University, Maher never shies away from calling out injustice when he sees it.

He ends the segment with the following mic drop:

“Moral of the story: Don’t be that person who wears the fur and feathers of tortured animals. Don’t wear Canada Goose. Only a douche does that. You won’t look cool—you’ll look cold.”
