Years of PETA Pressure Pay Off! Gaultier Finally Drops Fur

The corks are popping at PETA’s headquarters after Jean Paul Gaultier announced live on French television that he’ll ban fur from future collections, admitting that the ways animals are killed for their fur are “absolutely deplorable.”

The news comes after decades of pressure from PETA. Over the years, we’ve sent numerous letters and pleas asking Jean Paul Gaultier to ditch fur. In 2002, a member of the organization was thrown out of the designer’s Fashion Week show after causing a runway ruckus with her antifur message. In 2006, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk, Senior Vice President Dan Mathews, and other activists were arrested after occupying Gaultier’s Paris boutique.

The iconic company now joins Armani, Versace, Gucci, Burberry, Donna Karen, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood, and many others that have banned fur.

Fur today is as dead as the animals it was stolen from.

All animals—human and otherwise—want to live free from torment and pain. But those on fur farms spend their entire lives inside cramped, filthy cages. In the end, they’re beaten to death, gassed, or anally electrocuted—and their fur is sometimes ripped off while they’re still alive. Others are bred to grow to an enormous and unhealthy size so that their pelts will be more profitable after they’re killed and skinned.

It’s no surprise that once consumers understand who they’re wearing, they want nothing to do with fur and skins from dead animals. Designers resistant to the changing times may as well hang up their sewing needles now.
