Days After Bull Leads Cops on Chase, Another Truck Tips Killing 11 Cows

Every time that PETA sees an animal on the news who’s escaped from a transport truck and gone running through busy streets, dodging cars and fate, we root for the animal. So make no mistake, we cheered for the bull who recently escaped after a trailer crashed in Central Valley, California.

Some 25 cattle ran onto a highway near Stockholm, California, and obstructed traffic after a trailer carrying them crashed into another vehicle. Police officers rounded up all but one of them—a bull who refused to relinquish his freedom so easily. He led police on a chase down side streets and through a vineyard before authorities finally captured him.

No animal willingly gives up his or her freedom and life, whether it’s on the road or at the slaughterhouse.

Transport trucks are dangerous, speeding tragedies. Just three days after the young bull in Stockholm led cops on a chase, a truck carrying 89 cows tipped over near Atlanta. Several animals were hit by unsuspecting cars coming around a bend. Reports indicated that 11 cows died in the crash. Some were allegedly trapped inside the wreckage, while others kept traffic at a standstill. Authorities spent roughly 16 hours capturing the escaped cows.

There have been more than 50 accidents across the country in 2018 alone involving chickens, pigs, turkeys, and cows who were being transported to their deaths. The meat industry works tremendously hard to keep its horror show a secret, but during moments like these, at crash sites, we can no longer deny that individuals’ lives are at stake, whether or not we can see it.

Humans love to cheer for escaped cows, pigs, and other animals, as if these frightened living beings are somehow earning the freedom that they’ve deserved all along. We root for the underdog to escape and live, because—whether we want to admit it or not—we know a painful, cruel death ultimately awaits them.

Like all sentient beings, animals killed for their flesh value relationships and yearn to have full, meaningful lives. They shouldn’t have to leap from trucks or risk being hit by cars to be saved from a terrifying death.
