Just in time for National Coffee Day (September 29), PETA has released its first-ever Vegan-Friendly Cafés and Coffee Chains rankings, and New York–based Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee is one of just four chains to snag an “A.” Not only does the coffee shop offer a variety of nondairy beverage options—from macadamia to almond to oat milk—it also features a 100 percent vegan bakery with offerings including fresh homemade biscuits, seasonal scones, and more.

“From its top-notch banana nut crumble muffins to its decadent apple cider doughnuts, Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee is more than meeting the skyrocketing consumer demand for high-quality grab ‘n’ go vegan treats,” says PETA Campaign Director Danielle Katz. “PETA’s list identifies the can’t-miss cafés for healthy and cruelty-free fare—along with the chains that still have some work to do.”

The other top scorers on PETA’s list are Blue State Coffee, a chain based in Providence, Rhode Island, that offers nondairy beverages at no extra charge and many clearly labeled vegan meals, and Pret A Manger, which boasts numerous sweet and savory vegan eats. “B” awardees, such as Starbucks, have a selection of satisfying vegan offerings, and fewer options are offered by “C”- and “D”-rated chains such as Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ Donuts, respectively. And at the bottom of the rankings, “F”-awarded chains—such as Bruegger’s and Manhattan Bagel—offer nothing vegan, not even soy milk or a bagel with hummus.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that vegan beverages, pastries, and other foods are free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol. They also spare animals daily suffering and a terrifying death in today’s meat, egg, and dairy industries.
