The threat of a trade war with China is looming—and soy farmers warn that tariffs on soy exports to China, which currently receives one-quarter of all the soybeans grown in the United States, would cause “serious damage” to their industry. That’s why PETA plans to run a billboard in Des Moines—the capital of Iowa, which is the second-highest soy-producing state in the country and the home of the president of the American Soybean Association—that proclaims, “America’s Soybean Farmers Want You … to Go Vegan! Tofu: Born in China but Raised in the U.S.A.”

“PETA’s billboard calls on Americans to save our soy farmers by going vegan,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “In the face of a potential trade war, it’s our civic duty to choose healthy, tasty, and downright patriotic dishes such as veggie burgers; soy-based hotdogs, sausages, and ‘chicken’ wings; scrambled tofu; and more.”

Unlike meat, eggs, and dairy “products,” soy is packed with high-quality protein, is free of saturated animal fat, and contains zero cholesterol. Vegans are far less prone to suffering from heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer than meat-eaters are, and they save animals from immense suffering: In today’s meat and dairy industries, cows are forcibly separated from their beloved calves, chickens’ throats are cut while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated without painkillers, and fish are cut open while they’re still alive.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—plans to run the ad in Dallas, too.
