A box of bunny-shaped vegan chocolates is on its way from PETA to Knoxville-based accessories brand Patricia Nash Designs, which has removed all fur items from its inventory. The new fur-free policy comes after nearly two years of pressure from PETA and messages from nearly 140,000 PETA supporters calling on the company to stop selling fur, which often comes from animals who are caged, electrocuted, and even skinned alive.
“Patricia Nash’s new fur-free policy is right on trend, as shoppers and high-end designers alike are rejecting fur faster than ever before,” says PETA Director of Corporate Affairs Anne Brainard. “PETA is encouraging the few remaining retailers still selling fur to follow Patricia Nash’s compassionate example and ban it.”
As PETA’s video exposé narrated by actor Eva Mendes reveals, animals on fur farms in China—the world’s largest fur exporter—spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages, often without access to food or clean water, before they’re electrocuted, gassed, or skinned alive. Animals trapped in the wild are often caught in steel-jaw traps, which slam shut on their legs and can cut down to the bone, causing excruciating pain. Some even attempt to chew off their own limbs to escape. If trapped animals don’t die from blood loss, infection, or attacks by predators, trappers arrive to shoot, strangle, beat, or stomp them to death.
Patricia Nash Designs joins hundreds of other top retailers and designers—including Alpha Industries, Jimmy Choo, Furla, Gucci, Michael Kors, J.McLaughlin, and Rent the Runway—that have recently implemented fur-free policies.
PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear.” For more information, please visit PETA.org.
