In honor of the slaughterhouse-bound cows who were killed in a truck crash early Friday morning after the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, PETA is attempting to place a memorial billboard near the site of their deaths, on I-86 near eastbound exit 56. The billboard would show a cow’s face next to the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
“At least three gentle cows died when this truck reportedly hit a guardrail, and the rest were so badly injured that they all had to be euthanized before they even reached the slaughterhouse,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard would urge motorists to help prevent animals from suffering by choosing compassionate vegan meals.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that before cows are loaded onto packed trucks bound for slaughterhouses, they spend their short lives in cramped, filthy feedlots without protection from extreme temperatures. Calves are castrated and branded without painkillers, and at the slaughterhouse, workers shoot cows in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats—often while they’re still conscious.
