On March 6, a family’s search for their dog, Ranger—a chocolate Labrador retriever who’d been missing for two days—came to an awful end when they found his body underneath a garbage bag on the side of the road near the intersection of Nike Park Road and Reynolds Drive in the Carrolton area of Isle of Wight County. A necropsy revealed that Ranger had been shot once with a shotgun.

Police are investigating but have yet to make any arrests in the case, prompting PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty-to-animals charges of the person(s) responsible for this crime.

“Someone shot this beloved dog, bagged up his body, and dumped him on the side of the road,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is calling on anyone who knows anything about this dog’s disappearance or death to come forward immediately so that whoever killed him can be held accountable and stopped from hurting anyone else.”

PETA advises all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they’re outdoors, never allowing them to run loose unattended.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call Isle of Wight Animal Control at 757-365-6318.
