Orlando, Fla.

What:    Armed with signs that proclaim, “Time for a Sea Change: Let the Orcas Go” and “Jailing Whales Is Bad for Sales,” PETA supporters will gather outside SeaWorld on Sunday morning to mark the recent departure of SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby.

When:    Sunday, March 4, 10 a.m.

Where:    SeaWorld Orlando, at the intersection of Sea World Drive and Central Florida Parkway, Orlando

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that Manby’s departure came as SeaWorld reported losing 1.2 million visitors and $202.4 million last year. It faces a class-action lawsuit by investors, a criminal-protection lawsuit by visitors, and a criminal fraud investigation. In the last year alone, seven marine mammals have died at SeaWorld: three orcas, an infant dolphin, an infant beluga whale, a polar bear, and a walrus.

“How many CEOs have to go before SeaWorld lets the orcas go?” asks PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The writing is on the tank walls—SeaWorld’s only hope of survival is to release these animals into sea sanctuaries where they’d finally have a taste of freedom.”
