A Certificate of Appreciation and a box of delicious bunny-shaped vegan chocolates are on their way from PETA to the Brampton-based Hudson’s Bay Company to recognize the global retailer for using exclusively vegan materials for Team Canada’s Winter Olympics uniforms.
“With their faux-fur pom-poms, wool-free sweaters, and synthetic-down insulation, Team Canada’s uniforms prove how stylish and warm vegan outerwear can be,” says PETA Director of Corporate Affairs Anne Brainard. “PETA is celebrating the Hudson’s Bay Company for its compassionate and forward-thinking choice to outfit Canada’s Olympians in high-tech, modern materials that don’t harm a hair on an animal’s head.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—notes that animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages without access to adequate food or clean water before they’re electrocuted, gassed, or poisoned. Other animals killed for fur are caught in steel-jaw traps, which slam shut on their legs, often cutting down to the bone and causing excruciating pain. Birds used for down are often pinned to the ground by workers who violently yank out their feathers by the fistful while they’re still alive.
Faux fur can be great at trapping heat. And cruelty-free insulating fabrics—such as PrimaLoft, Thinsulate, lyocell, bamboo, and others—are warm, cozy, and allergen-free, and unlike down, they don’t collect dust and mold and they even insulate when wet.
