Just days before the new season premiere and wearing little more than bodypaint to resemble orcas, Vanderpump Rules stars Lala Kent, Ariana Madix, and Scheana Shay stand shoulder to shoulder in a brand-new PETA campaign proclaiming, “Come Together to Free the Orcas From SeaWorld.” The eye-popping ad urges everyone to put up a united front against the abusement park until the orcas held there are released into seaside sanctuaries.
“When I saw the documentary Blackfish, it literally changed my entire life,” begins Kent in an accompanying video spot.
“Orcas have died at SeaWorld, and the fact that none of them died from old age is just insane,” says Shay.
“There’s a better way to do this, and we know the better way,” adds Madix. “So why not do it?”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that in the wild, orcas form complex relationships, work cooperatively to find food, and traverse up to 140 miles in the ocean every day. But orcas at SeaWorld are housed in incompatible groups inside tiny tanks, and some have even been given the drug diazepam to manage their stress-induced aggressive behavior. So far, 41 orcas have died on SeaWorld’s watch, and six marine mammals have died at its parks this year alone.
Madix, Kent, and Shay join a long list of celebrities—including Noah and Trace Cyrus, Jhené Aiko, Steve Aoki, Travis Barker, Fifth Harmony, Kesha, and P!nk—who’ve teamed up with PETA or its affiliates to promote kindness toward animals.
