Just in time for Hanukkah, comedy legend Carol Leifer—the stand-up comic and writer behind Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Saturday Night Live, and more—has teamed up with PETA for a new video that offers tips for celebrating a cruelty-free Hanukkah.
With help from two young assistants—”I don’t know whose kids you are,” she tells them—Leifer shares how easy it is to veganize latkes and jelly doughnuts with a little help from egg replacer and vegan butter. Dark chocolate gelt makes for a cruelty-free game of dreidel, and soy (not beeswax) candles complete the vegan celebration.
“So this holiday season, you can serve delicious, traditional favorites and be kind to animals by veganizing your festivities,” Leifer concludes, before directing viewers to PETA.org for all the recipes and closing with a parting, “‘Oil‘s well that ends well!’ You’re not above that joke. You’re not, and you know it.”
Leifer, who previously shot a PETA video about hosting a vegan Seder, is part of a growing list of celebrities—including Sarah Silverman, Alicia Silverstone, Mayim Bialik, Jason Biggs, Marc Maron, David Cross, and many others—who’ve teamed up with PETA (whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”) to promote kindness to animals.
