What: The gigantic lighted sign that people will see above the 101 Freeway the evening before Thanksgiving won’t be a traffic advisory but a shopping advisory. Several PETA supporters will gather at a busy overpass above downtown during rush hour to hold up huge lit-up letters spelling out “SHOP VEGAN.” The electrifying message aims to encourage motorists to make compassionate choices for animals this holiday season and all year round.
When: Wednesday, November 22, 6 p.m.
Where: Broadway overpass on the 101 Freeway (at the intersection of Broadway and Aliso Street), Los Angeles
“From faux-fur coats to vegan leather wallets, there are so many wonderful cruelty-free gift options to put under the tree,” says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. “PETA’s dazzling airborne message will encourage everyone to add some beauty to the world by steering clear of cruelty and shopping vegan instead.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—notes that animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to filthy wire cages before they’re electrocuted, gassed, poisoned, or even skinned alive for their fur. Cows in the leather industry are electroshocked before their throats are slit and their skin is cut off, and for handbags and fashion accessories, reptiles’ necks are hacked open and metal rods are jammed through their spines while they’re still conscious.
