Beetle-Tainted Baby Formula Recalled
Yet another reason why “breast is best” when it comes to feeding human babies: Millions of containers of Similac powdered infant formula have been recalled because beetles were found in some of them. According to the company that makes Similac, “[I]nfants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.” Of course, cow’s milk–based formulas can wreak havoc on babies’ systems even if the formulas aren’t tainted with beetle parts, since cow’s milk is meant for baby cows, not baby humans. Mothers can keep their babies from ingesting insects—or scary dairy contaminants like pus—by always breastfeeding their babies instead of giving them formula.
