What:    We all know that the holidays can be stressful, but imagine how stressful they are for turkeys! So Thursday in Springfield, a giant “turkey” will lead PETA members in a special Thanksgiving tasting and give-away: free vegan Tofurky sandwiches, along with turkey-shaped stress-relief squeezies—PETA’s way of encouraging everyone to make the holidays less stressful for turkeys by celebrating with delicious vegan meals.

When:    Thursday, November 9, 12 noon

Where:    At the intersection of E. Adams and S. Sixth streets (in front of the Old State Capitol), Springfield

“The holidays can be a nightmare for gentle turkeys, who are killed by the millions for Thanksgiving dinners alone,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to give birds a much-needed break this Thanksgiving by choosing hearty, healthy vegan roasts.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that vegan foods like Tofurky items spare turkeys the agony of being hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath before their throats are slit, often while they’re still conscious. Vegan holiday roasts are also packed with protein and free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol.
