Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5, and PETA is encouraging everyone to do something fetching with that extra hour: Spend it with your canine companions. To honor your dogs’ devotion to you, and how lucky you are to have them, PETA recommends the following activities:

  • Take your dogs to a park, river, or hillside and hike, run, play ball, or let them swim;
  • Read up on dog massage and give them a relaxing rub;
  • Throw them a party—like a howl-a-thon or bark mitzvah—with dog-safe carrot cake and home-made dog biscuits;
  • Arrange a simple gathering of their best pup pals somewhere where they can socialize;
  • Find a way to let them dig, jump, and sniff without interfering or telling them no;
  • After that special hour, settle down with them in front of a video featuring dogs, and if they want to bark at the screen, let them!

“Showing dogs consideration for their interests is the best and most loving way to spend that extra hour in the day,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages every guardian to set aside that slot for Spot, which will brighten the day regardless of how soon it gets dark outside.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—also recommends taking long-term steps to improve the quality of life for dogs, including never crating them, walking them at least four times daily and taking different routes to keep things new and stimulating since this is how they get their “daily news,” and hiring a dog walker while you’re at work.
