When truck driver Warren Padgette saw the white chicken lying in the middle of a Washington highway, he thought that she was dead—until she blinked at him. So he scooped her up as cars whizzed by, drove her home—passing the slaughterhouse-bound truck that she had fallen from—and named her Lucky. She was in bad shape, abnormally large for her young age because of all the hormones that had been pumped into her and missing most of the feathers on her stomach. Now, as this touching video shows, she’s a healthy mama hen to several tiny chicks, and she hardly ever leaves Warren’s side. (Her favorite spots are nestled against his legs and on his shoulder.)
Thanks to both luck and love, this charmed chicken managed to escape the cruel fate of so many animals who are killed for food. And these days, when Warren drives past trucks headed to slaughterhouses, he says that he wishes he could save every single chicken on board.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has posted more details about Lucky’s rescue story here, and I’d be happy to answer any questions that you might have. Many thanks.
