Nearly Naked PETA Protesters Will Denounce Cruel Bid to Waive Slaughter-Speed Regulations

What: Wearing little more than red bodypaint, two PETA protesters will lie as scalded chickens in a tub on the busy streets of Washington, D.C., on Thursday to protest the National Chicken Council’s recent request that the U.S. Department of Agriculture lift the line-speed limitations for slaughterhouses that kill young chickens. Protesters will also hold signs proclaiming, “Chickens Suffer MORE With ↑ Slaughter Speed” and “Speeding Slaughter Line = Chickens Scalded to Death.”

“Slaughter lines already move so fast that millions of chickens every year are fully conscious when they’re dunked into scalding-hot defeathering tanks,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling for the National Chicken Council’s bid to make this horrific problem even worse to be thrown straight into the trash.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that chickens killed for their flesh are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are often cut while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.
