PETA has placed a billboard near chicken slaughterhouses owned by Tyson Foods and Koch Foods—as well as processing plant American Proteins—in Cumming that proclaims, “Meat Stinks. Go Vegan.” The billboard aims to encourage everyone repulsed by the odors emitted by these facilities to steer clear of meat in favor of vegan food, which tastes—and smells—delicious.

The billboard is located on Canton Road just north of Samaritan Drive and will remain there for four weeks.

“The stench of blood, excrement, and death emanating from this terrible trio is enough to turn anyone’s stomach,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on everyone who doesn’t enjoy the smell of dead chickens to go vegan.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that chickens killed for their flesh are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds, where intense crowding and confinement lead to outbreaks of disease. They’re bred and often drugged to grow so large so quickly that their legs and organs can’t keep up, making heart attacks, organ failure, and severely deformed legs common. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are often cut while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Tyson Foods, Inc., and its subsidiaries release more pollutants into waterways than DuPont, ExxonMobil, and Phillips 66 combined. A PETA exposé revealed that workers at the Tyson Foods slaughterhouse in Cumming slammed birds into shackles and urinated on the slaughter line.
