Because more and more Hollywood stars, top musicians, pro athletes, and influential YouTubers are joining the vegan ranks, the competition to be crowned the Hottest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2017 by peta2, PETA’s youth division, was tougher than ever—but AFI’s Davey Havok and Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch trounced the competition to take home top honors.
The runners-up among the ladies are social media influencer Eva Gutowski and singer-songwriter Skylar Stecker, while the male runners-up are Blink-182’s Travis Barker and alt-hip-hop star Raury.
Petsch was raised vegetarian and went vegan as a young teen. “I turned vegan [at] 14,” she said in a video interview with peta2. “I felt a lot healthier. I didn’t feel as lethargic because I wasn’t eating milk or eggs.” Earlier this year, she showed off her vegan pride in an edible curve-hugging bodysuit made entirely of bok choy for a peta2 ad that proclaimed, “Turn Over a New Leaf—Go Vegan.”
Havok, a longtime vegan, promoted vegan clothing last year by posing in the buff for a steamy anti-leather peta2 ad. As he explained in a peta2 video, “[N]o article of clothing, feeling of confidence, or otherness is worth the torture or the murder of an innocent creature.” He also tackled the toxicity of producing leather, a coproduct of the meat industry, which includes the massive carbon emissions of cattle and the tannery chemicals that pollute nearby water supplies: “[I]f you are wearing leather whilst not eating animals, you’re still contributing to the destruction of … the ecosphere.”
Previous winners of peta2’s Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity contest include Waka Flocka Flame, Andrea Russett, Ariana Grande, Zendaya, The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness, Mindless Behavior’s Princeton Perez, and Fall Out Boy’s Andy Hurley.
