Bakersfield Firefighters Nab PETA Award for Saving Dog From House Fire

First Responders Revive Unconscious Canine With Special Oxygen Mask

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Bakersfield Fire Department, which responded to a fire at a house on Quarter Avenue on Wednesday and searched through the heavy smoke until they found Jack, the homeowners’ beloved dog. He was unresponsive, so firefighters used a specially designed oxygen mask to revive him (as shown on Facebook) and rushed him to a veterinary hospital, where he’s expected to make a full recovery—and where firefighters visited him the next day.

“Thanks to the courageous firefighters of the Bakersfield Fire Department, this little dog survived a terrifying fire and will soon go home to his loving family,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their kindness and determination will inspire people everywhere to do whatever it takes to help animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—encourages all animal guardians to watch PETA’s fire-safety video and to put a sign on their doors or windows in order to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs, cats, and other animal companions. Families can order stickers from the PETA Catalog or make their own.

The fire department will receive a package of the fire-alert stickers, a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.
