“Cornell students are an innovative, forward-thinking lot, which explains why they can’t get behind such an udderly cruel and obsolete way of honoring the former vice president,” says PETA Director of International Youth Outreach Ryan Huling. “peta2 is working with these compassionate students to remind everyone that choosing delicious dairy-free ice cream helps mother cows and their babies, who endure a lifetime of abuse in the dairy industry.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that cows in the dairy industry are repeatedly artificially inseminated to force them to produce milk. Their babies are taken away shortly after birth, causing many mother cows to bellow in distress for days. Male calves are shoved into tiny veal crates, while females endure the same fate as their mothers until their bodies give out and they’re slaughtered at about 4 years old—far short of the species’ 25-year life expectancy.
