The Oak Park Department of Public Safety has accepted PETA’s offer of rich and creamy So Delicious ice cream bars for its new ice cream truck, which will be distributing 300 free ice cream sandwiches a week to kids in the community from May 22 through the fall. PETA’s cruelty-free treats are lower in fat and sugar than their dairy-based counterparts and will help the department truly serve (dairy-free frozen treats) and protect (kids’ health).
“Dishing out dairy-free ice cream treats is a sweet way for authorities to engage with residents while looking out for their health and well-being,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “By scooping up PETA’s offer, kind officers are helping people beat the heat and giving cows a break.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that dairy foods are one of the most common allergens for young children and that consuming them has been associated with acne, bloating, constipation, ear infections, and symptoms of lactose intolerance (which affects 70 percent of African Americans). Choosing vegan ice cream bars is also kinder to mother cows on dairy farms, who are artificially impregnated and then separated from their newborn calves immediately after birth so that their milk can be consumed by humans instead.
