Myth-Busting Scientist Jonathan Balcombe Will Join PETA for Special Celebration of Hard-Hitting New Book, What a Fish Knows

On May Day, the PETA Empathy Center will host four exhibits designed to promote empathy for fish—including a “hooked” human being who will be suspended from the ceiling and “mermaids” who will describe how fish protect one another, use electrical signals to communicate, and more. Acclaimed biologist Jonathan Balcombe will then take the stage for a special reading from his new book, What a Fish Knows: The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins, followed by a Q&A session and a book signing.

When:        Monday, May 1, 7–10 p.m.

“Fish feel pain and fear, just as dogs, cats, and humans do,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging everyone to choose delicious faux-fish meals and spare sensitive aquatic animals the agony of being impaled, crushed, cut open, and gutted.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that fish are skewered through their sensitive mouths or are dragged out of oceans in huge nets (along with unintended victims, such as dolphins, turtles, seals, and others). Many slowly suffocate or are crushed to death, while others are still alive when their throats and stomachs are cut open.

Light refreshments and cruelty-free appetizers will be served at the event.
