Stark naked and hanging on a meat hook between the bodies of slaughtered pigs, 67-year-old PETA President Ingrid Newkirk will stare down from a mobile billboard that’ll be trucked around Citi Field and the Meatpacking District this Saturday to denounce the Bacon and Beer Classic with the message “We’re All the Same. Go Vegan.” PETA is also running the ad on phone kiosks in the Meatpacking District and Chelsea, urging brunchgoers and residents to bid bye-bye to bacon, give pigs a thought, and go vegan.
Where: Near Citi Field, 123-01 Roosevelt Ave., Queens
When: Saturday, April 29, 12 noon–4 p.m.
“If most people stood inside a slaughterhouse, as I’ve done, and watched pigs lose their lives, they’d lose their appetite for these wonderful animals’ flesh,” Newkirk says. “PETA reminds everyone that our own flesh not only looks like theirs but also tastes like theirs and that no one should celebrate events that involve violence and death to other living beings.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that in the industrialized meat industry, mother pigs are squeezed into narrow metal stalls barely larger than their bodies and kept almost constantly pregnant or nursing. Pigs’ tails are chopped off, their teeth are cut with pliers, and males are castrated—all without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, they’re hung upside down and bled to death, often while still conscious.
