Wearing the same “SeaWorld Kills” T-shirt that she wore onstage last summer at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Bully frontwoman Alicia Bognanno appears in a new video for peta2, PETA’s youth division, in which she urges fans to “fight against SeaWorld.”

“[I]t’s incredibly inhumane,” Bognanno explains. “A lot of the animals in SeaWorld are forced to be together and they’re incompatible with each other, so that leads to a lot of violent and aggressive behavior, which causes them to be drugged so they don’t attack each other.”

In nature, orcas share intricate social relationships, work cooperatively to find food, and traverse up to 100 miles of ocean every day. Those in SeaWorld’s tanks float listlessly, swim in endless circles, and break their teeth by gnawing on steel gates and concrete walls. Thirty-eight orcas have died prematurely on the company’s watch.

“Don’t support SeaWorld,” Bognanno concludes. “Don’t support companies that support SeaWorld. Treat animals the way that you would want to be treated.”

peta2—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—is calling on SeaWorld to release the orcas to a seaside sanctuary where they could be rehabilitated and would finally have the opportunity to swim freely and engage in natural behavior with minimal human interaction.

Bognanno joins a long list of musicians and other celebrities—including D.R.A.M., Kesha, Matt and Kim, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, and members of Rise Against, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, and Manchester Orchestra—who have teamed up with peta2 to promote kindness to animals.
