Holly Marie Combs on the Powerful Love and Heartbreaking Pain of Captive Orca Mothers
As a mom herself, Pretty Little Liars actor Holly Marie Combs understands the extraordinary bond between a mother and her baby. The connection an orca mother feels with her newborn is instant—and lifelong. In fact, orcas in the wild live in pods, which are bonded groups of up to 30 orcas—including mothers and their offspring—that travel together for their entire lives. When Holly learned about the complex social structure of orcas and heard the screams of a captive mother as her baby was taken away, she teamed up with PETA to highlight yet another reason to boycott SeaWorld.
Orcas at SeaWorld are trapped in cramped tanks. They are inbred, and the babies are torn away from their mothers.
SeaWorld is a horrible place for orcas, who endure stress, boredom, and depression in captivity. In the wild, orcas live in large social groups, spending their lives with their families. They’re intelligent animals who are meant to swim up to 100 miles a day, but at SeaWorld, they’re confined to tanks.
Remember: Every purchase of a SeaWorld ticket contributes directly to the suffering of these majestic animals.
