PETA Calls On the Public to Help Solve Bird-Shooting Cases

Last month, two common loons reportedly died from shotgun pellet wounds—one was found in Truro, and the other was found weeks later in Eastham. Because of their depleted populations, common loons are listed as a species of “special concern” in Massachusetts.

Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the shootings—which violate the Migratory Bird Treaty Act—so PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction for cruelty to animals or for federal violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of the person or persons responsible for each crime.

“At least two birds have been shot and left to die from grievously painful injuries,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about either case to come forward immediately, before anyone else gets hurt.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—offers tips for helping wildlife and reporting cruelty to animals on its website.
