Beginning this Saturday, visitors to downtown Norfolk’s Slover Library will see special behind-the-scenes photographs taken by PETA fieldworkers during their visits to help dogs penned and chained up in backyards. While some images show dogs who are tied up near fallen trees and piles of junk or whose paws have sunk into mud, others show a happy ending—such as for Andie, who went from being a puppy on a chain that weighed more than she did to snuggling on the couch with her new family.
When: Saturday, March 11, through Friday, March 17
Where: Slover Library (lobby), 235 E. Plume St., Norfolk
In addition to “before” and “after” photos of dogs who were rescued and adopted by loving new families, the exhibit will include a new celebrity-narrated video—featuring the voices of Tom Hardy, Casey Affleck, and others—that features footage of neglected dogs and encourages people to treat their animal companions like family by never leaving them chained up outside to suffer in the cold, hungry and alone.
“These moving photos give a glimpse into the lonely lives of the sweet dogs PETA sees every day,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “It’s up to all of us to help animals like these by speaking out against cruelty and encouraging our neighbors to keep their dogs indoors, never isolated in the backyard, chained up or penned.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—serves as a 24/7 resource for animals in need. In addition to providing free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, the group delivers free doghouses, flea and flystrike prevention, food, water, and other basic necessities to dogs who are kept chained up or penned outdoors.
