Heroic Dog Nabs Award for Saving Stroke Victim’s Life

PETA Celebrates Mac the Labrador for Alerting Guardian to Neighbor’s Predicament

A Heroic Dog Award is on its way from PETA to the Scott family for their 7-year-old black Lab, Mac, who came to the rescue of a neighbor on January 17: Marcia Allen had suffered a stroke in her backyard and collapsed. When the normally quiet Mac spotted her in the yard next door, he began frantically barking until his guardian, Dave Scott, came outside and saw Allen on the ground. Scott made sure that she was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated and released within 24 hours.

“I will say that he saved my life …. It’s just amazing what he did, because I could have been laying out there for a very long time,” says Allen. “Mac the hero. He’s a wonderful dog.”

“This dog sensed that something was wrong, and he didn’t rest until his neighbor got the lifesaving help that she needed,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “His story is an inspiration, and PETA encourages anyone with the ability and resources to care for an animal to save a life by adopting from a local shelter.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—is sending the Scott family a framed certificate and a letter of congratulations, along with a “doggie bag” of toys and vegan treats for Mac to enjoy.
