Toast Your Next Meal With These Vegan Wine Brands

Published by PETA Staff.

Did you know that most wines are vegan? However, some of them are made using animal-derived substances during the filtering process, called “fining agents.” These filters sometimes include gelatin from fish bladders (called isinglass), casein (derived from milk), or bone marrow. Yuck! Thankfully, several common fining agents used to make wine are animal-friendly, which means that your local grocery, health-food, or liquor store and online retailers are overflowing with vegan wine options. Here’s a taste of some of our favorite vegan wines, all available in stores or online.

Cheers to vegan wine!

Stella Rosa

These Stella Rosa options are vegan: Black, Red, Berry, Rosé, Peach, Pink, Green Apple, Platinum French Vanilla, Moscato, Tropical Mango, Prosecco, Black Lux, Pearl Lux, Pearl Lux Rosé, Orange Moscato, Pineapple, Watermelon, and Ruby Rosé Grapefruit.

Bellissima Prosecco

Christie Brinkley’s line of 100% organic Prosecco and sparkling wines is made from grapes grown in Treviso, Italy. Her eco approach continues all the way to the wine’s packaging, which uses organic ink and environmentally friendly materials.

Blossom Hill

The following options of this widely available brand are vegan: chenin blanc (South Africa, 2007), cabernet sauvignon (Chile, 2007), Blossom Hill Signature Blend White (U.S., 2006), and shiraz (South Africa, 2007).

Charles Shaw Red Wine Varieties

Charles Shaw, affectionately known as “Two-Buck Chuck,” offers budget- and vegan red wine options. The inexpensive brand’s red wine blends (cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and merlot) are available at Trader Joe’s and—according to Barnivore.com—are vegan.

Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards

This winery—based in Ontario, Canada—creates red, white, and rosé options.

DAOU Vineyards

“[O]ur wines are [v]egan friendly,” a DAOU Vineyards representative confirmed to Barnivore.com earlier this year. That means you can feel good about sipping any one of DAOU’s delicious reds, whites, or rosés, available in many major grocery stores. (Bonus tip: If you ever find yourself at the winery’s tasting room in Paso Robles, California, note that you’re vegan—the winery offers off-menu vegan snacks that are worth asking for!)

Frey Vineyards

All wines from this California vineyard are vegan. Read about its wine-making process here.

JUSTIN Wines

A tad on the expensive side, wines from Paso Robles favorite JUSTIN Wines are vegan and worth it. The brand confirmed to Barnivore.com in January 2019 that its wines are indeed still vegan. Pro tip: If you are new to JUSTIN Wines and don’t know which kind to choose, start with ISOSCELES, the brand’s flagship wine—it pairs well with a juicy Beyond Burger.

Layer Cake Wines

Known for being as affordable as they are delicious, Layer Cake’s wines are also all vegan. Choose from a wide variety of reds, whites, and rosés.

Lumos Wine Company

Oregon-based Lumos Wine Company makes its products from certified organic grapes and guarantees that each bottle is filled with vegan vino. Choose from reds, whites, and rosés, each “[s]imply amazing.”

Natura Wines

Using only organically grown grapes from Chile’s Central Valley, Natura Wines offers seven options—three whites and four reds—all of which are vegan.

Our Daily Wines

“Organic, no detectable sulfites, vegan, and gluten free”—that’s Our Daily Wines’ promise.

Palmina Wines

The Vermentino 2015 white wine of this Santa Barbara, California, winery was poured at a White House state dinner.

Red Truck Wines

The Original Red Truck wine—a red blend—was introduced in 2002. Now, the brand offers chardonnay, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and Pink Truck—all vegan and all delicious.

Seghesio Family Vineyards

In business since 1895, this award-winning vineyard in Sonoma County, California, produces a wide variety of wines that you can peruse here.

Sutter Home

The vegan options of Sutter Home include riesling, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, gewürztraminer, and chenin blanc. The brand is available at most grocery and liquor stores.

thumbprint cellars

Wrights Vineyard and Winery

This New Zealand–based winery’s current owner is a third-generation winemaker. With that type of experience, you can’t lose. (Check out the winery’s Natural Wine Co. line for fresh “New World”–style wines.)
