Two life-sized inflatable bulls will lead a spirited PETA protest outside General Motors’ (GM) headquarters on Thursday. With signs proclaiming, “Branded, Beaten, and Slaughtered,” the protesters will demand that GM start offering vegan leather in car interiors for all models—a call that comes on the heels of a recent PETA video exposé that showed that cows were branded on the face with no pain relief, electroshocked, and beaten on cattle ranches that supply GM’s leather processor.

Where: GM Renaissance Center, at the intersection of E. Jefferson Avenue and Brush Street, Detroit
“Every leather car interior means the torment and death of a gentle cow,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on General Motors to embrace cost-effective, eco-friendly, and humane vegan leather seats and steering wheels.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that an eyewitness reported that cows suffered from open, bloody wounds and sometimes trampled one another in panic when forced to go through tight chutes. At slaughterhouses, their throats were slit and their skin was cut off.
