Wild orcas live in large social groups and spend their entire lives with their families. Corky spent her own early life with her family, but one day in 1969, while she was swimming next to her mother, she was suddenly caught in a net. After that, they would never see each other again.

Corky was sold into captivity—where she has remained for the past 47 years. She has been forced to endure seven pregnancies and was kept continuously pregnant for close to 10 years, from 1977 to 1986. However, none of her calves survived more than 46 days. Her last stillborn fetus was found at the bottom of her holding tank.

Of the 13 members of her pod who were captured between 1968 and 1969, Corky is the only one still alive. She has endured the longest captivity of any wild-caught orca. She has spent the last 47 years in a concrete tank and is reportedly blind in her left eye. In addition, her upper and lower teeth are worn and decayed.

But she could and should spend her senior years in a sanctuary in the ocean, where members of her family still live.
