Teens Text Butterball to Ask, ‘Why Does Butterball Encourage Eating Babies?’

Now that Butterball is inviting people to text the company with questions about how to cook turkeys, peta2—PETA’s youth division—has mobilized its young followers to text the company and urge it to offer a vegan turkey roast instead and to get out of the business of slaughtering these sensitive birds. Some examples of texts that peta2 members have already sent include, “Turkeys are usually killed when they are only 5 or 6 months old. Why does Butterball encourage eating babies?” and “Turkeys are smart, sensitive animals …. Why does Butterball kill them when there are compassionate vegan options?”

“The texting generation is saving animals’ lives by going vegan at an unprecedented rate,” says peta2 Senior Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “If Butterball truly wants to stay relevant, it will listen to peta2’s supporters and offer vegan options instead of dead birds.”
