First Responders Receive PETA Award for Heroic Rescue of Cat From Water Tower

Terrified Animal Stranded for Days Is Now Safe and Recovering

A Compassionate Action Award is on its way to Technical Rescue Systems for its November 2 rescue of a cat who had been stranded for four days atop a converted water tower in LaSalle. After receiving a call that morning from concerned local residents, two climbers from the company, Brady Thomas and Daniel Winning, scaled the tower and whisked the animal to safety in a carrier while a crowd below applauded. The cat, now named Tower, has received a veterinary checkup, and the rescuers have received many inquiries from families who want to adopt her.

“These kind and determined men from Technical Rescue Systems bravely scaled a high tower to save this terrified cat from tragedy,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA encourages caring people everywhere to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA is sending Technical Rescue Systems a framed certificate and a box of delicious vegan cookies.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—would like to remind all cat guardians that the safest place for their feline companions is indoors. Cats who are allowed to roam outdoors may catch diseases such as feline AIDS, be hit by cars, or even be intentionally harmed by cruel humans. All animal companions, including cats, should be escorted outdoors on a safe, secure harness and leash. In addition, PETA encourages anyone who spots a cat stuck in a tree or on a high structure to call authorities for help immediately.
