University of New Mexico Decides Against Cruel Mascot Plan
January 2004
When we learned that the University of New Mexico (UNM) was considering a plan to use a wolf as its football mascot, PETA fired off a letter to the school’s athletic director, asking him to reject this cruel plan. We had been inundated with calls and e-mail messages from people who were outraged by this announcement, and we provided them with the appropriate contact information and asked them to write polite letters voicing their objections. Twenty-four hours after our letter went out, UNM’s athletic director made a public plea for people to stop e-mailing him, as the university had decided against this ill-conceived plan.
