Keane loves to sprawl across his guardians’ bed, snuggle in front of the television, and frolic in the backyard with his canine BFF, Rex—so you’d never guess that he started off life chained in a dirt-filled, junk-strewn yard of a breeder in North Carolina. Living outdoors in the cold with poor nutrition, stress, and anxiety, Keane developed severe mange—his skin turned bright red and was covered with painful sores.

Fortunately, as this PETA video shows, his then-owner agreed to surrender Keane to PETA, who provided him with veterinary care and found him an adoptive home where he’s loved, cherished, and kept safely indoors. “It’s pretty amazing … seeing how he could go through all that and still just come right in and be part of the family,” says new guardian Eric in the video—and the sight of Keane and Rex running around the house together proves his point!
