Morikami Museum Ends Cruel Prize Giveaways
October 2007
PETA was contacted by attendees of the summer festival Obon at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida, about the fact that goldfish were being given away in small plastic bags. According to complaints that we received, children were reportedly poking at the fish, and some unwanted fish were dumped into trash cans, where they would have suffocated had caring people not rescued them. PETA contacted the cultural director, Tom Gregersen, who, upon consideration of the cruelty involved in giving away animals as prizes, implemented a new policy for future events that prohibits giving away any living creature.
