Online Pet Store Shuts Down
January 2001
PETA was inundated with e-mails expressing concern over the inception of an online pet store called “OrderPuppy.com.” The site showed listings for purebred puppies, to be ordered online and shipped anywhere in the country from a notoriously cruel animal dealer in Kansas. The site even provided a virtual shopping cart in which to place animals before “checkout.”
PETA contacted the site’s host company, Cybernet Business Professionals, Inc., to notify it of the cruelty inherent in the site’s peddling of animals on the Internet. We also posted an action alert asking concerned individuals to write to the company.
The president of Cybernet Business Professionals, Inc., agreed that the site was cruel and would only perpetuate the already-overwhelming animal-overpopulation problem and decided that his company would stop hosting it, in effect shutting it down. Cybernet Business Professionals has also agreed to refuse to host other sites that exploit animals in the future.
