On Monday, animal control officers were called to investigate a case in which a Labrador–pit bull puppy was locked inside a metal cage, shot in the head, and left to die beside Holcomb Path Road in Campbell County.

Campbell County Animal Control is investigating the incident, but authorities have yet to make any arrests. That’s why PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime. The Danville Area Humane Society and the Virginia Alliance for Animal Shelters are each offering an additional reward of $1,000, which brings the total reward to $7,000. A photo of the dog’s body, as it was found inside the crate, is below.

“The person who was able to look this puppy in the eye, shoot him in the head, and leave him to die is surely a danger to society,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately, before anyone else gets hurt.”

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Campbell County Animal Control dispatch at 435-592-9574.
