On August 22, an officer at the Throop Police Department responded to a call about an emaciated dog a witness reportedly saw being abandoned on Pancoast Street by a man driving a black Mitsubishi Galant. At just 12 pounds—far less than the healthy 35 to 40 pounds for a dog her size—the skeletal boxer mix, Chelsea, was too weak to walk or stand and is currently receiving emergency veterinary care.
Law-enforcement officials have yet to identify the Mitsubishi Galant’s driver or make any arrests in connection with this case, prompting PETA to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
To help with the search, PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has also created free downloadable posters, available here, for members of the community to post on bulletin boards and in windows of businesses in the area.
“It’s heartbreaking to imagine the agony and terror that this dog felt as she was slowly starved and then dumped like a piece of trash and left to die,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately—before the culprit hurts anyone else.”
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call Officer Sandy Scala at the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter at 570-586-3700, extension 510.
