To help festivalgoers realize that a corpse is a corpse—whether pig, poultry, or person—PETA protesters will “cook” a nearly naked PETA member on a grill at Ottawa Ribfest on Wednesday. Flanked by a banner reading, “Meat Is Murder,” the macabre diners will point out that all animals are made of flesh, bone, and blood—just as humans are—and that eating meat means eating the corpse of an animal who was an individual with feelings and a unique personality.

Where:           Intersection of O’Connor and Sparks streets, Ottawa

When:             Wednesday, June 22, 12 noon

“Flesh is flesh, and every animal killed by the meat industry had feelings, the capacity to develop friendships, and the same desire to live that we do,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Most of us would never consider eating another human being, and that’s why PETA is calling on caring people to replace meat with tasty vegan barbecue this summer.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—has documented that chickens, pigs, cows, and fish feel pain and fear just as intensely as dogs, cats, and humans do. But in the meat industry, chickens’ and turkeys’ throats are cut while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated and their tails are cut off without being given any painkillers, and cows are hung upside down and often skinned while they’re still able to feel pain. On the decks of fishing boats, fish suffocate or are cut open while they’re still alive.
