University of Michigan Ends Use of Cats in Intubation Training
December 2011
Following a year-long campaign by PETA and its supporters, the University of Michigan (U-M) announced that it has ended the use of cats in its Survival Flight intubation training laboratory. Cats used in this course had hard plastic tubes repeatedly forced down their windpipes, which can cause bleeding, swelling, scarring, collapsed lungs, and other traumatic injuries and even lead to death. But thanks to U-M’s compassionate decision, from now on only sophisticated and humane simulators that replicate human anatomy will be used for this course.
