Holding a sign urging, “Trudeau: End Canada’s Commercial Seal Slaughter,” a PETA member wearing a seal costume will greet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the 2016 Liberal Biennial Convention in Winnipeg on Saturday. PETA is urging Prime Minister Trudeau to usher in a new era of compassion and fiscal responsibility by ending federal subsidies of the commercial seal slaughter.
Where: RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, 375 York Ave., Winnipeg
When: Saturday, May 28, 11:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
“For years, the Canadian government has poured millions in taxpayer dollars into a failing industry that shoots, bludgeons, and skins seals,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Campaigns Dan Mathews. “PETA is calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to do what the last administration wouldn’t and end subsidies to the cruel commercial seal slaughter.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals our not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that the U.S., the EU, and Russia have all banned seal products. PETA’s “spokeseal” trailed Prime Minister Trudeau last month in Washington, D.C., as he met with President Barack Obama, who has spoken out against the seal slaughter.
