A Compassionate Action Award is on its way from PETA to Diego Andrés Dávila Jimenez for his heroic rescue of a neighbor’s dog who was hanging from her hips between the rails of a 13th-floor balcony. After learning that the neighbor wasn’t home and unsuccessfully attempting to nudge the pup, named Luna, to safety with a broom from one floor below, Dávila stepped onto the balcony railing and climbed up to the one above him. He pulled the terrified dog to safety as a crowd that had gathered below—with a mattress in case one of them fell—exhaled in relief and cheered.

“Dávila acted with no time to lose, and his bravery and compassion saved this dog from a horrific death,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes his kindness will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” reminds all dog guardians to make sure that their yards and balconies are secure—with sturdy fencing and no potentially poisonous plants or other materials—and never to leave animals outside unattended.

Dávila will receive a framed certificate and a box of delicious vegan cookies.
