It’s clear that vegan food is now everywhere in Detroit. That’s why, for the first time, the city has landed on PETA’s list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in the U.S., debuting in the number-four spot and earning a framed certificate for Mayor Mike Duggan to display. Paul McCartney kicked off this year’s awards by presenting top honors to Portland, Oregon (photo available here).
“With satisfying meat-free soul food, vegan pizza, seitan Reubens, and more, Detroit’s got it all,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Detroit hustled on to PETA’s list this year, thanks to its plethora of creative dishes that are as delicious as they are kind to animals.”
Detroit’s all-vegan eateries include the famous Detroit Vegan Soul—where compassionate diners can get mac ‘n’ “cheese,” “catfish” tofu, and barbecue tofu sandwiches, among other delicious dishes—and nearby Chive Kitchen, home of phenomenal citrus-marinated tofu tacos, a “corned beef” seitan Reuben, and even a tasting plate of delicious cashew-based cheeses. Hit up vegan-friendly Buddy’s Pizza, Hippies Pizza, or Inn Season Café for a piping-hot pie topped with melty vegan cheese, or check out the numerous vegan options at Seva Detroit, PJ’s Lager House, Brooklyn St. Local (with vegan poutine!), and Mac Shack, among many others. Just outside Detroit in Ferndale is GreenSpace Café, an artisanal vegan restaurant and cocktail bar run by Dr. Joel Kahn, a cardiologist who advocates plant-based eating.
Rounding out PETA’s list are Los Angeles; New York; Nashville, Tennessee; San Diego; Honolulu; Austin, Texas; Seattle; and Richmond, Virginia.
